Day 19 – Bully Stick Time

Today I made a trip to Dog Daze and got some supplies for the fur-babies. I thought a round of bully sticks would be a nice treat for Bellona and Caesar.

Bellona was happy to have a treat although it was somewhat awkward for Big B to hold her bully stick while chewing. I tried to hold it for Bellona but she refused the help. She’s such a stubborn girl.

Tomorrow my warrior starts Chemo.  I hope it goes well and no complications.  I’ll post tomorrow evening after we get home.

Day 18 – Someone stole my chair

Since Bellona is feeling better she decided to take my chair again.  Here in the near future Big B will climb up and sleep in my husband’s recliner like she used to.  Just wait it will happen in the very near future.  Big B likes to steal your spot when you go to the kitchen or walk out of the room for any reason.  Bellona is Ninja quiet even now with 3 legs.  I guess I’ll be sitting on the dog bed now while the dogs monopolize the furniture.  Bellona has my chair and Caesar has the couch.  How can you protest 2 Cane Corso?

Day 18 – Fun in the snow

Sorry, I’m a little behind in posting the fast couple of days.  Here in the NW we still have snow… at least we still do at home.  For the most part it’s melted off in all the other cities between home and work.

We have 2 days till Bellona starts her first round of Chemo.  Bellona had a fun time hopping around in the snow yesterday.  It was hard to get a good picture since it was getting dark out.  Sorry for the grainy picture.

Day 16 – Vet visit and update

We went to the vet and Bellona got her stitches out.  W00t!  W00t!

A preliminary pathology report came back from Bellona’s leg.  CSU said yes it’s Osteosarcoma.  We are still waiting for the final report to find out if we caught it early and how aggressive it is.  So, what does that mean now?  Bellona needs to have Chemo and starts her first round on Sunday.

I have mixed emotions about putting Big B through Chemo, but I know she’s a strong girl and take it.  She’ll get through this, cancer isn’t the worst thing that can happen.  We are great pet parents and fight hard for our fur-babies.

Day 15 – Stitches coming out tomorrow

I forgot to mention Bellona is getting her stitches out tomorrow.  She’s had bad experiences with incision sites opening up after stitches were removed so we got to leave them in a few extra days to be on the safe side.  Today is day 15 so hopefully the extra time will help.

Day 15 – Guess what your daughter did?

I received a call from my husband today and he said, “Guess what your daughter did?”  That’s a horrible way to open a conversation especially since I’m the emotional type.  Of course my mind thinks the wost of things.  Bellona fell down, ripped out her stitches, jumped up on the bed…  The list went on and on.

My husband had been playing with Bellona and she was trying to use the tricks she knows.  Some of her tricks prove to be difficult on 3 legs.  Playing dead (bang) would be pretty easy.  Bowing down would be hard, but I’m sure Big B will try it sooner or later.  But the trick she did today was High-5 (Paw).  That silly dog was sitting and put her weight on her back end and gave my husband her paw.  And not just once, Bellona did it several times.

I guess that proves that Bellona is felling better and able to play and act silly as she normally would.  Please don’t start a conversation with me by asking, “Guess what your daughter did?”  If so, I’ll probably have a heart attack and who wants that on their conscious, right?

Day 14 – Outside and no leash

Tonight we thought Bellona was up to the challenge and let her go outside in our backyard without a leash.  She seemed to be excited to hop around the backyard at her leisure.  Actually it took a while to get Big B back inside even thought it was pouring down rain.

I had to beg her to come in and was tracking her with a flashlight since it was dark.  And did I mention pouring down rain?  I was afraid she’d fall and get hurt and then I’d be in big trouble.  Bellona is starting to feel comfortable with her new hop.  We have a fairly large backyard as far homes in the suburbs go.  Bellona was hop, hop, hopping all over  the yard smelling the grass, eating the grass and going potty wherever she wanted.  Who would have thought that something so simple would be liberating for Bellona.

Day 14 – New Collar

Yesterday my husband went to our favorite independent pet supply store and came home with a present for Bellona.  She’s a little shy and wasn’t up to model her new collar but these pictures were the best I could get.  Maybe she’ll strike a pose when her hair grows back and Big B is more confident.  She’s pretty bad ass with her stitches and skull collar.

Day 13 – Dogs are people too

Bellona is still doing great.  It’s been pretty cold here in WA (30 degrees right now) so she’s still sleeping upstairs.  Bellona took a trip out to the front yard yesterday to show her 3-legged hop to the neighbors.  Big B also got to lay in the sun yesterday too.  Laying in the sun is high up on Bellona’s favorite things.  Probably in the top 3 with sleeping on our bed and sleeping on the couch.  Bellona’s got a long way to go before she can get on our bed so the sunshine and the couch will have to do for now.

I’m glad to have neighbors that are also pet parents of dogs.  People without pets don’t understand why we took extreme measures to take care of Bellona.  Millions of people have their dogs left outside, but that’s not how it works at our house.  Our dogs are just as important as any human in our house too.  Our fur-babies already have better nutrition than we do.

Day 12 – Update

Bellona is still doing well.  She hasn’t had another bad episode of Phantom Pain lately.  Last night we took a trip to Costco and got Bellona a new bed.  I also gave Big B her Valentine present – a plush lobster.  Bellona understandably doesn’t want to play still.  Here’s a few pictures I took last night.
